Freiburg

After beginning 2023 in second place, Freiburg have slipped down to sixth position following their opening two games of the new year. They were humbled with a heavy 6-0 defeat away to Wolfsburg, before they played out a 1-1 draw against Eintracht Frankfurt in midweek.

Randal Kolo Muani gave Frankfurt the lead in the 42nd minute, but Matthias Ginter equalised two minutes after half time, and with neither side able to find a winner, both teams had to be content with a point.

The midweek result extends Freiburg's unbeaten home run to 11 games in all competitions, and they will be hoping to continue their superb home form on Saturday as they look to claim their first win of the calendar year.

Freiburg will be confident of claiming all three points after winning their last four Bundesliga games against Augsburg by a combined 11-1 scoreline.

Roland Sallai could miss out through injury, while Nicolas Höfler is suspended after picking up his fifth yellow card of the season against Frankfurt.

Augsburg

After battling valiantly in an entertaining 4-3 defeat to Borussia Dortmund at the weekend, Augsburg ended an eight-game winless run in the Bundesliga with a narrow 1-0 win over Borussia Mönchengladbach on Wednesday thanks to Mergim Berisha's 82nd-minute winner.

The Fuggerstädter head into the weekend in 14th place, with two points separating them from the bottom three. Although they will be keen to claim consecutive victories on Saturday, their recent away form suggests that may prove to be a difficult task. Augsburg have drawn one and lost three of their previous four Bundesliga away games. They have at least been in fine goalscoring form on their travels, finding the net in seven of their eight away league matches this term.

Augsburg ended a run of nine Bundesliga games without a clean sheet in their midweek home meeting with Gladbach, and they will be looking for another strong defensive display on Saturday.
