Choupo-Moting sinks former club as Bayern dump PSG out of Champions League
Bayern Munich are through to the Champions League quarter-finals after a 2-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain this evening.
Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting scored the opener against his former club as Bayern Munich defeated Paris Saint-Germain 2-0 at the Allianz Arena to progress to the Champions League quarter-finals with a 3-0 aggregate victory.
However, it was the away side that enjoyed most of the possession in a first half that saw them successfully press Bayern high up the pitch.
The first real chance of the game came in the 25th minute when the Bayern defense blocked two attempts from Lionel Messi, who was in a promising position in the box.
Six minutes later, Bayern threatened at the other end, with Gianluigi Donnarumma pulling off a fine save to keep out a low shot from Jamal Musiala.
A few minutes after PSG captain Marquinhos went off injured, Yann Sommer almost gifted the French champions the lead. Vitinha was allowed to shoot at an empty net after the Bayern goalkeeper lost possession in a dangerous position, but, fortunately for the Bavarians, Matthijs de Ligt was on hand to clear off the line.
Bayern failed to make the most of their chances at the start of the first half, with Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting first taking too long on the ball to finish in a promising position and then blocking a Joshua Kimmich shot shortly afterwards.
Moments later, the striker headed the ball into the net, but the goal was disallowed when Thomas Muller was adjudged to be offside.
Bayern continued to press and were rewarded for their persistence just after the hour mark when Choupo-Moting finally gave them the lead. The home side stole the ball from Marco Verratti and Leon Goretzka found Choupo-Moting, who slotted the ball home.
PSG tried to pile on the pressure in the closing stages, but instead Bayern put the game to bed in the 89th minute when substitute Serge Gnabry finished off a counter-attack with a left-footed finish.
The Germans had the ball in the net once more before the final whistle, but Sadio Mané's strike was disallowed for offside.
