Wimmer strikes late in Wolfsburg and Union stalemate
Union Berlin have hit somewhat of a dip in form in recent weeks domestically. Nevertheless, the Eisern army made the trip to Lower Saxony for a meeting with Wolfsburg.
The Köpenick based club have lost all three of their visits to Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga without scoring a single goal.
Urs Fischer’s men were undoubtedly hopeful that they could capitalise this evening. Especially given the notable absence of yellow card suspended Wolfsburg skipper Maxi Arnold.

The remainder of the half had little to nothing of note to report on. Both sides well and truly cancelled each other out with strong defensive displays. However, Omar Marmoush did spurn one guilt-edged chance before the interval – the Egyptian did the hard part in rounding Knoche but failed to bend the ball beyond Ronnow.
Sheraldo Becker, who is currently experiencing a goal drought, dragged a 51st minute shot across goal. As the clock hit 60 minutes, another opportunity fell to Marmoush. Nmecha released Gerhardt down the left flank. His cross found Marmoush but Rønnow was equal to the header, pulling off a fine save. The breakthrough tonight finally came through the right boot of Juranovic from the spot. A foul on Laïdouni committed by Guilavogui gave referee Robert Schroeder an easy decision to make.
At the other end, Marmoush denied once again by Rønnow on a night where nothing would hit the net for the Egyptian forward. A totally different night for Patrick Wimmer who made it 1-1 with practically his first touch. A cut back from Paredes found the Austrian who bent the ball beyond Rønnow with the aid of a minor Diogo Leite deflection. A point apiece for the two sides hotly contesting the European places in the Bundesliga table.
