Reus relinquishes BVB captaincy
German footballing legend Marco Reus took to Borussia Dortmund's social media channels on Thursday to announce that he would be relinquishing his captain's armband after five years.
Now 34-years-of-age, Borussia Dortmund's longtime leader has confirmed that he will spend at least one more season chasing titles with his club of 11 seasons. The German footballing legend will nevertheless not don the captain's armband for the 2023/24 campaign. A video message from Reus popped up on the BVB's twitter channel on Thursday evening.
"Whilst on vacation, I've had much time to think and have decided to pass on the captain's armband to another," Reus says in a short video. "I was allowed to wear this armband proudly for five years. That was a great honor. Thank you for the wonderful support."
As for who will serve as the squad's skipper during the upcoming season, a decision probably won't be forthcoming until well into Dortmund's training camp in mid August. Potential candidates include defenders Nico Schlotterbeck and Niklas Süle. Following their stellar seasons, BVB trainer Edin Terzic may also opt to pass the title onto Julian Brandt or Emré Can.
