Gladbach reveal that Lainer has cancer
Borussia Mönchengladbach have revealed that right-back Stefan Lainer has been diagnosed with cancer of the lymph-nodes.
Borussia Mönchengladbach must do without right-back Stefan Lainer indefinitely. On Thursday morning it was revealed that that the 30-year-old has received a lymph-node-related cancer diagnosis. It was not immediately revealed whether the diagnosis was of the Hodgkins variety or not. The club did emphasize that the diagnosis was caught early and that the Austrian should be able to make a full recovery.
"With early detection, it is very well treatable with medication and curable," a club statement read, "There is a very high probability that health will be completely restored afterwards and that a normal life, including professional sports, will be possible."
As in years past, Lainer was expected to compete with American right-back Joe Scally for the starting right back role. The pair split the starting duties under the head-coaching regime of Adi Hütter during the 2021/22 campaign. Lainer eventually supplanted Scally during the latter stages of the 2022/23 campaign under the regime of Daniel Farke, starting the final five matches.
