Union Berlin vs. Eintracht Frankfurt preview: Die Eisernen out to end losing run

Union Berlin will attempt to end poor run of form when they play host to an in-form Eintracht Frankfurt side on Saturday.

Union Berlin

Union are currently enduring a woeful spell of form, having lost 11 consecutive games in all competitions. The most recent of those defeats took place in midweek when they were beaten 1-0 by Stuttgart in the second round of the DFB-Pokal, representing the fourth straight game where Union failed to find the net.

After being eliminated from the Pokal, die Eisernen will now turn their attention back to league matters. Having failed to pick up any points since winning their opening two Bundesliga games, Union are currently languishing in 15th place, with one point separating them from the bottom three.

Having lost their last three home league games by a combined 8-0 scoreline, Union will have their work cut out in Saturday’s clash with Frankfurt. Perhaps, the hosts can draw inspiration from the fact they have won 2-0 in both of their last two home games against die Adler.
Team News

Alexander Schwolow, Josip Juranovic and András Schäfer are all set to miss out through injury, while there are doubts surrounding the availability of Janik Haberer and Danilho Doekhi. Meanwhile, Rani Khedira is suspended after being sent off against Werder Bremen last weekend.

Eintracht Frankfurt

Frankfurt head into the weekend in the midst of a fine run of form, having won four and drawn one of their last five matches across all competitions. Their only draw in their five-game unbeaten run took place against Borussia Dortmund last weekend. Omar Marmoush netted a brace to give his side a two-goal cushion, before Marcel Sabitzer and Youssoufa Moukoko found the net to level the contest. While die Adler retook the lead through Farès Chaïbi, they still had to settle for a share of the spoils following Julian Brandt’s 82nd-minute equaliser.

Although they missed out on a win last Sunday, Frankfurt had no such trouble in claiming a victory in their midweek DFB-Pokal meeting with third-tier side Viktoria Köln. Ellyes Skhiri and Ansgar Knauff both got on the scoresheet, as die Adler secured a 2-0 victory to book their place in the third round.

They will now turn their attention back to league matters, with Sunday’s visitors looking to close the four-point gap to the top six. Having scored at least two goals in each of their last five competitive matches, they will hope to showcase their firepower against struggling Union.

Frankfurt Dino Toppmöller is confident Kevin Trapp, Mario Götze and Robin Koch will be fit to feature against Union. However, the visitors are unable to call upon Willian Pacho and Sebastian Rode.
