Stuttgart left stunned as Heidenheim claim derby bragging rights

High-flying Stuttgart made the trip to take on Heidenheim in a Swabian derby. Silas Mvumpa’s crucial penalty miss would prove costly for Stuttgart as Jan Schöppner and Tim Kleindienst struck to give Heidenheim a shock 2-0 win.
With chances at either end in the early exchanges, it was Benedikt Gimber’s crucial intervention that prevented Silas Mvumpa establishing a Stuttgart breakthrough. At the other end, Jan Schöppner’s 17th minute header shaved Nübel’s crossbar.

Heidenheim grew into the occasion further as the hour mark arrived, however nothing could pass Waldemar Anton. Multiple chances came and the German centre-half repelled every attempt with the aid of Zagadou and Nübel to support him. As the rain thundered down, so too did Stiller’s 38th minute set-piece that left Müller rooted in goal but failed to alter the scoreboard.

Chances were few and far between until the 57th minute when Mainka coughed up a penalty for a foul on Anton. With Guirassy absent Silas stepped forth, but the Congolese winger blasted over and in doing so spurned the opportunity to put Hoeneß’ side ahead.

As if it were written in the stars, Heidenheim sailed into a 1-0 lead with 20 minutes left on the clock. Once again, Jan-Nicklas Beste’s pinpoint delivery from a corner met the head of Jan Schöppner. The midfielder gave Nübel no chance as his effort crept inside the left upright to the delight of the home fans. Kleindienst put a memorable seal on the derby victory when he pounced on Anton’s mistake and lobbed Nübel from a 48-metre range.
