Schalke confirm Knäbel's premature termination

FC Schalke 04 announced that they would be parting ways with chief sporting executive Peter Knäbel ahead of schedule.
Rather than vacate his position as board member for sport at the end of the season, Schalke 04 administrator Peter Knäbel has been removed from his post on New Year's Day 2024. The 2. Bundesliga club has opted to operate without anyone in position for the time being. Knäbel will nevertheless remain loosely linked with Schalke in an ill-defined "advisory role" until June.

"Together with our new CEO Matthias Tillmann and Christina Rühl-Hamers, we have made the decision to restructure football at Schalke without the position of board member for sport," Supervisory Board chairman Axel Hefer explaining in a statement, "As we want to make these adjustments at the start of the new year, we mutually agreed with Peter to end the cooperation at board level on 1 January. Further steps will be taken by the Executive Board in a timely manner."

"The structural process initiated by the Supervisory Board and the Executive Board has accelerated a little and has now reached a point where my departure from the Executive Board is understandable both in terms of content and timing," Knäbel added in his own statement,  I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Supervisory Board and my colleagues on the Executive Board and the employees for their cooperation. I wish them, the club and the fans all the best."
