Dissatisfied Arnold looks ahead to Frankfurt challenge: "We just have to not play like we did today"

By Peter Vice

Three points of tantamount importance in Wolfsburg's own bid for the Champions' League very nearly weren't collected on Saturday.

Midfield general Maximilian Arnold confirmed after the tight 1-0 win over Köln that German Wolves knew they'd have to play better down the stretch run of the campaign.

Maximilian Arnold wasn't in a very complimentary mood on Saturday afternoon, even after his side solidified their hold on third place in the Bundesliga table with a vital win.

"The first half was abysmally bad," Arnold confided to the Sky microphones afterwards, "[Köln] should have taken the lead."

The 26-year-old former German national team midfielder spoke of an impassionaied half-time speech in the Wolfsburg dressing room; one in which both players and coach participated. Germany's green company team took the lead in the second-half, but Arnold still didn't sound satisfied.

"We have to be aware that we can't just beat anyone in the Bundesliga like that," he noted, "When you're the top of the table, you a cleanse a choppy match."

The Wölfe ended up taking the lead after some truly dogged work from striker Wout Weghorst kept an attack alive. The Dutch striker then showed tremendous ingenuity to set up teammate Josip Brekalo for what proved the game-winning goal. The Croatian's finish was also helping by a slight deflection.

Ahead of a huge match against Eintracht Frankfurt, the team that nips at their heels in the table, Arnold made clear that his squad needed to play better.

"We just have to not play like we did today," he remarked with a mischievous grin on his lips, "then we'll be ready."
