After rumours circled about a move yesterday, 1.FC Kaiserslautern have strengthened their squad with the signing of Alex Murphy.
As announced by the Rhineland Palatinate outfit this afternoon, the 22-year-old joins on loan from Newcastle United.
Murphy, a Republic of Ireland U-21 international, is a versatile defender and can play not only at left-back but also central defence.
With Kaiserslautern currently employing a 3-4-2-1 formation, it remains to be seen whether Murphy plays as a wing-back or centre-half.
Despite struggling for minutes at the Magpies, Murphy brings Champions League nous from his role in a 3-2 win over Qarabag last season.
“Alex has already proven at his previous clubs that, despite his young age, he possesses high quality and can therefore take on responsibility on the pitch.
His strengths include his positional flexibility and his control of the game, which also fits our aggressive style of play off the ball.
“We are delighted to have acquired another talented player who fits our squad planning perfectly,” said sporting director Marcel Klos.
