Ole Book targets “pearls” as he outlines attacking football vision at Dortmund

After being announced as Sebastian Kehl’s replacement as Borussia Dortmund sporting director two days ago, Ole Book took questions from journalists at a press conference on Wednesday.

Describing BVB’s approach as “something very special”, the former Elversberg sporting managing director outlined his vision for the style of football he wants the Black and Yellows to play.

“I have stood for and still stand for brave and attacking football. However, we will analyse the squad – what we can deliver, what we offer, and how we want to be successful. Above all, the success of the team comes first, in the short, medium, and long term. I see myself responsible for all of these perspectives.”

Book added that the squad should be built around a mix of young talents – “pearls” – and experienced players who can guide them.

“It’s all about fit. Every player who is considered for Borussia Dortmund has a very high level of quality. We want to put a team on the pitch where every cog fits into the next – that is detailed work,” Book explained.

“Hard work is the foundation of scouting, scouting is the foundation of squad planning, and squad planning is the foundation of BVB’s success. That’s why we should start with hard work.”

“I have already texted Nico”

Asked about the club’s ongoing contract talks with Nico Schlotterbeck, whose current deal runs until 2027, Book wouldn't say much.

“I have already texted Nico and hope that we can speak soon,” said the new BVB boss.

“But I don’t want to comment further at this point after being in the job for just three hours and 15 minutes.”

Bild reported on Tuesday that Dortmund had made a breakthrough in their bid to extend Schlotterbeck’s contract, claiming that only final details still need to be resolved.
