Rose on Bayern's coaching situation: "I wish Max all the best at our flagship club."
RB Leipzig trainer Marco Rose found himself in the awkward position of having to answer questions about his former boss Max Eberl whilst speaking at his Thursday pre-match presser. Most all German eyes, even amongst the more tangential of football fans, now focus on the administrator who first brought Rose to German football five years ago.
Whilst serving as the chief sporting executive for Borussia Mönchengladbach, current top Bayern exec. Max Eberl hired Rose away from the RB system to coach the foals ahead of the 2019/20 season. Though Rose (after an unsuccessful spell at Dortmund) was hired at Leipzig prior to Eberl's installation in January of 2023, the two men once again crossed paths in Saxony.
"When Max calls, I always pick up," Rose said at the RB presser, "I ask him how it's going and what's up. I wish him all the best and hope that we see each other again soon. Everyone in Germany is watching [the Bayern coaching situation] with great interest."
"And naturally I wish Max all the best and hope he finds an ideal solution soon," Rose continued, "It would be beneficial for Germany to see our top club, our international flagship club, to have a trainer in place to end the speculation."
A reporter asked Rose if he was prepared to "immediately pack his bags and join Max in the South". Rose, looking tense yet trying to be humorous, retorted back with a question. Did the reporter mean that he would "join Eberl on holiday at Bayern's resort on the Tegernsee"?
The reporter clarified, asking if Eberl would ask him to come to club headquarters at the Säbener Straße to "help him out in this emergency situation". Rose - a Leipzig native generally thought to feel at home back in the RB system - kept his response pretty vague.
"I think that Bayern can manage just fine without Marco Rose," the coach said, "Sometimes situations arise football that are a bit tricky and knotty. It's not an easy market for Bayern right now, but I'm nevertheless certain that they'll find a solution."
