Hoffenheim created, dominated and threatened – but it was St. Pauli who struck. In a lively Bundesliga encounter, missed chances and a decisive header told the story as the visitors from Hamburg snatched the advantage.
Here is our detailed match report for the game:
Match report
Both teams carved out promising opportunities inside the opening ten minutes. Hoffenheim looked particularly sharp in transition, while St. Pauli more so reacted to Hoffenheim's attacks.
Danel Sinani came close with a crisp volley from the edge of the box that flashed just wide of the post - a warning shot that set the tone for a lively first half.
Andrej Kramarić then tried his luck twice with audacious chips over Nikola Vasilj. The first effort forced the St. Pauli goalkeeper to make himself big and punch the ball away at full stretch. On the second attempt, the Croatian forward applied just a touch too much power, watching as his delicate effort sailed narrowly over the crossbar.
Vasilj embodied extremes in this match. At times, he was outstanding, producing sharp reflex saves and commanding interventions to keep his side level. Yet there was also a moment of near calamity in the 30th minute when he almost gifted Grischa Prömel a goal with a loose action inside his own area - a heart-in-mouth moment for the visitors that fortunately went unpunished.
Hoffenheim would have been justified in feeling they deserved a lead at the break. They were the more dominant side, controlled large spells of possession, and fashioned the clearer opportunities. St. Pauli, however, remained dangerous on the counter and proved they needed little invitation.
Then came the breakthrough - and it belonged to the visitors from Hamburg. Manolis Saliakas delivered a precise cross into the box, where Mathias Pereira Lage rose to meet it with a firm header. The ball nestled into the net, sealing Pereira Lage’s first-ever Bundesliga goal and stunning the home crowd.
It was a classic example of efficiency over volume: Hoffenheim had threatened repeatedly, but St. Pauli struck when it mattered most.
For Hoffenheim, the story was one of frustration and missed opportunities. They had many good chances in the last 15 minutes to get the equaliser, but they just couldn't do it on this day against a stubborn St. Pauli defense and a great Nikola Vasilj in goal.
In the end, one well-timed cross and one decisive header made the difference in a match that could easily have swung the other way. A huge result for Blessin's side!
