Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz is reportedly close to joining Liverpool, having chosen the Reds over Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich.

According to Sport Bild, Wirtz did not base his decision on financial factors. The report claims that his expected salary at Anfield - between €20–22 million per year - is less than what Bayern Munich had offered.

Instead, the 22-year-old is said to have made his choice based on sporting reasons. Liverpool head coach Arne Slot reportedly made a strong impression - both tactically and personally - in contrast to the Bayern bosses.

Behind the scenes in Munich, Bayern board member for sport Max Eberl’s role in the failed transfer remains a topic of discussion, according to the report. Neither Eberl nor new head coach Vincent Kompany were able to convince Wirtz to make the move to Bavaria.

A key shortcoming was their inability to clearly define Wirtz’s role in Bayern’s tactical setup despite a lengthy presentation by Kompany. As a result, Wirtz has chosen a new challenge in the Premier League.
