England were pushed to the pin of their collar in Atlanta this evening by a gutsy Congo DR side. Ultimately, Thomas Tuchel's side came from behind to snatch a late 2-1 win – Harry Kane's delightful brace guiding the Three Lions into a last-16 clash with hosts Mexico.
This game burst to life inside 7 minutes, which left much of the Atlanta Stadium stunned when Congo DR took the lead. Chancel Mbemba's ball to the back post found Brian Cipenga on the left to control and drill a zippy shot caught Jordan Pickford out at his near post.
England's frustration was plain to see when Jude Bellingham scythed down FC Augsburg's Nathaniel Mbuku for a yellow card. The former BVB midfielder would be denied by the gloves of Lionel Mpasi minutes later, producing a strong hand to keep the header at bay.
The Three Lions' onslaught continued, leading to a Marcus Rashford chance which was deflected off the goal-line by Wan-Bissaka. Congo could have even doubled that lead before the break – the width of the post kept Wissa's strike out after a cross from the right.
Mpasi was quickly becoming a Congolese national treasure, spreading himself to repel Kane from a corner before half-time arrived. Rashford rattled the side netting upon the restart, with Mbuku's last act being a vicious long-range effort which ricocheted wide.
English substitutions brought the key to pick the Léopards' defence with 15 minutes remaining. Anthony Gordon's cross met the head of Bayern striker Kane on it's way to the left corner of Mpasi's goal. The sense in Atlanta was Congo DR's energy was waining.
This proved to be the case late on as England pushed for a winner. That moment came when Kane, pushed wide of the target, unleashed a thunderbolt to the roof of the net. Mpasi stood, frozen to the spot as a brave Congo DR bowed out, while England head for the Estadio Azteca.
