Waldemar Anton could take on increased responsibility at Borussia Dortmund in the coming season.

As reported by Kicker, much suggests that the German international will step into the role of Dortmund’s third captain, which became vacant following Julian Brandt’s departure on a free transfer.

With captain Emre Can sidelined by a cruciate ligament tear and vice-captain Nico Schlotterbeck out with a medial ligament injury, Anton could be seen wearing the armband from the start of the campaign.

It is also being reported by multiple German outlets that Dortmund are ready to offer the 29-year-old a new deal beyond 2028 on improved terms.

The centre-back has been linked with a move to Manchester United, but staying at Dortmund appears far more likely at this stage, and a contract extension would put the speculation definitively to bed.
