Serge Gnabry was deemed surplus to requirements at Bayern a few months ago, but the German international is now a key figure in the club’s excellent start to the season. In a new role behind the talismanic striker Harry Kane, Gnabry scored in each of the last three league games after providing a couple of assists in the curtain raiser against RB Leipzig.

Bayern’s sporting director Christoph Freund praised the 30-year-old as someone who has an “outstanding character” before the win against Hoffenheim. “First, he was a potential sale candidate in the media. Now, it's about a contract extension," said Freund.

The player himself talked about the situation in an interview with Sky. "I'm not worried at all right now," said Gnabry before facing another of his ex-clubs after scoring in the 4-1 win in Hoffenheim.

“I'm just happy that things are going so well, and that we're playing so well. And, we'll see about everything else when the time comes," he said before talking about Friday’s game against Werder Bremen.

“Bremen was special for me as it was my first Bundesliga stop after Arsenal. It was a great time, and I still have a certain connection to the club. I'm looking forward to playing against them. I wish them all the best in the games they don't play against us, of course.”
