Werder ran out convincing 4-1 winners in the capital this evening. Goals from Olivier Deman, Jens Stage, Marco Grüll and Patrice Čović sealed a commanding victory after András Schäfer’s first-half red card left Union down to ten men.
Head coach Daniel Thioune was highly satisfied with his team’s display.
“I’m naturally delighted. Our goal was to build on last week’s performance. We were, of course, aware of the challenge here in Berlin. When you’re 1-0 down and know our history, I’d say that was a top performance from my team today, a very mature display.
We played with great focus. After going 1-0 down and receiving a red card, the pressure was a bit heavier than some might have realized.”
Goalscorer Jens Stage also reflected on what could prove to be a crucial victory.
“We can be proud of ourselves today, these are three very important points for us. Our performance was good from the start, and now we need to continue in the same vein in the coming weeks.
We already showed promising signs before the Heidenheim match. Now we’re finally scoring goals and getting results again.”
Meanwhile, 18-year-old Patrice Čović, who scored his first senior goal late on, called on the team to keep building momentum.
“We simply needed that one game where luck was finally on our side again. When you don't win for so long, your confidence eventually dwindles. Today you could see how much the win against Heidenheim had benefited us. Now we want to get three points against Mainz as well.”
Back-to-back victories have lifted Bremen out of the bottom three, and they now turn their attention to another crucial fixture next weekend when fellow relegation battlers Mainz visit the Weserstadion.
