Christopher Nkunku back in Leipzig? It sounds like the sort of transfer rumour that would have been laughed off a few months ago. Yet, suddenly, it is becoming a genuine possibility.

RB Leipzig are reportedly exploring a move to bring their former star back from AC Milan, with the German club looking to strengthen their attack during the final weeks of the transfer window. Transfermarkt, Sky and Italian media have reported concrete interest from Leipzig.

Nkunku left Leipzig for Chelsea in 2023 for around €60 million. His time in London, however, never quite developed as expected, and the Frenchman eventually moved on to AC Milan last summer for an initial €37 million.

Now, just one year after arriving in Italy, Milan are reportedly willing to let him leave. Transfermarkt reports that the Rossoneri are asking for around €35 million - meaning Leipzig could potentially bring back a player they once sold for €60 million at a significantly lower price.

That is still a sizeable investment, though, and Leipzig are reportedly exploring a loan with an option to buy rather than immediately committing to a permanent transfer. Milan, meanwhile, are said to prefer a straight sale for their asking price.

At Milan, Nkunku recorded 11 goal contributions in 35 appearances last season, but apparently failed to convince new head coach Ruben Amorim that he should remain part of his plans. Milan are therefore open to moving the 28-year-old on.
