Neuer & Baumann closing in on joint Bundesliga record

After Bayern's 4-1 victory over Hoffenheim on matchday 4 of the 2025/26 Bundesliga campaign, the two German goalkeepers are closing in on a very old Bundesliga record.

Manuel Neuer and Oliver Baumann have a lot in common. Not only are both goalkeepers playing at the same time, they both left their hometown club (Gelsenkirchen / Freiburg) for another Bundesliga club (Bayern / Hoffenheim) and created a legacy for themselves there.

Both goalkeepers eventually became captains of their new club and both goalkeepers were chosen as the number 1 for the German national team - now, they are closing in on reaching an old Bundesliga record, with the possibility of setting a new one as well:

Neuer and Baumann have come up against each other on 26 separate occasions in the Bundesliga! The only goalkeeping duo to play against each other more times is Eike Immel and Uli Stein (27).

Since both Neuer and Baumann are captains of their clubs and undisputed starters, this record will likely be matched in the second half of the 2025/26 season, when Bayern host Hoffenheim for the return game.

As it stands right now, both goalkeepers are also set to continue their Bundesliga career next season - then they would set the new record for themselves only.

Out of the 26 games so far, Neuer was able to win 18 times, while Baumann left the pitch as the winner only four times. The remaining four games were draws.
