Augsburg boss backs Gikiewicz and plays down Ortega links

Augsburg are said to be keen on Arminia Bielefeld goalkeeper Stefan Ortega, but there are no plans of replacing Rafal Gikiewicz in goal, according to club boss Stefan Reuter.
Sky Germany recently reported that Augsburg have targeted Arminia Bielefeld goalkeeper Stefan Ortega as a possible replacement for their current number one, Rafal Gikiewicz.

Augsburg managing director for sport Stefan Reuter, however, insists the club are not looking to replace 34-year-old Gikiewicz.

"Since he joined Augsburg [in 2020], Rafal Gikiewicz has been an important player at the back for us. Therefore, we are absolutely satisfied with him," said Reuter, according to Kicker.

"Rafal knows how to deal with rumors that come from outside, recognizes the appreciation of all FCA officials and enjoys our fullest confidence."

Bielefeld have offered a new contract to Ortega, whose current deal expires at the end of the season. Bayern München, among others, are said to be interested in the 29-year-old.
