Augsburg vs Wolfsburg preview: Can Augsburg tame the Wolves?

Augsburg have the chance to move three points clear of danger with a victory on Sunday, but they will still be reeling from the 3-2 defeat they suffered against Stuttgart before the international break.

André Hahn and Michael Gregoritsch netted either side of a Waldemar Anton effort to give Augsburg a 2-1 lead at half time against Stuttgart. However, the visitors would leave the Mercedes-Benz arena empty-handed as goals from Omar Marmoush and Tiago Tomás condemned Augsburg to defeat.

With their last 11 league matches yielding just two victories, Augsburg may enter Sunday's contest in a pessimistic mood. They can, however, take confidence from the fact that they have lost just once in their previous five home games in the Bundesliga, highlighting that they have been a tough team to beat on home turf in recent times.

They also stand a good chance of finding the net on Sunday, with Markus Weinzierl's side scoring in 11 of their 12 home league contests this term.

Although, Augsburg will need to overcome their recent struggles against Wolfsburg if they are to win on Sunday, with the hosts winless in their last eight Bundesliga meetings with Die Wölfe.
Team News

Augsburg will have to cope without the two players who scored in their last outing, with Hahn and Gregoritsch ruled out after testing positive for COVID-19. Ruben Vargas, meanwhile, is a doubt for the contest due to illness.

Wolfsburg

Wolfsburg sit just five points above the bottom three ahead of Sunday's contest, and the visitors will be in low spirits after losing their last two matches.

With one win in their last five matches, Florian Kohfeldt will be fully aware that he needs to turn around his side's fortunes.

Their recent away form will be of particular concern, with Wolfsburg winning just once in their previous eight Bundesliga away games. A shaky backline has been the main factor in that poor run, as Die Wölfe have conceded two or more goals in six of their last eight away league matches.

Wolfsburg will be hoping to replicate the 1-0 victory they picked up against Augsburg in the reverse fixture, with a Lukas Nmecha goal proving enough to help Die Wölfe to all three points on that occasion.
Team News

Kohfeldt will miss the contest after testing positive for COVID-19, with Vincent Heilmann set to lead the side in Kohfeldt's absence. Luca Waldschmidt and Koen Casteels are among those that miss the trip to Augsburg due to injury issues.
