Reports: Ekkelenkamp transfer wobbles after player rejects Brugge

By Peter Vice

According to three Dutch news sources, there has been a last minute U-turn in Hertha's sale of Dutch youth international Jurgen Ekkelenkamp.

Het Laatste Nieuws", "Nieuwsblad", and now "De Telegraaf" claim that Jurgen Ekkelenkamp's reported transfer to Club Brugge is now off. An article appearing on the Telegraph's website quotes the 22-year-old's agent claiming that the Dutch youth international has instead opted to join former Wolfsburg trainer Mark van Bommel over at Royal Antwerp.

"There was an agreement between Hertha BSC and Brugges," Mo Sinouh of ICM Stellar Sports is quoted as saying in the article, "But Jurgen tended toward him to Antwerp, which then also reached an agreement with Hertha BSC. After a sleepless night, it was a decision based on his feeling towards [technical director] Marc Overmars and [head-coach] Mark van Bommel. This is not a question of money."

The reports suggest that Hertha will still receive a transfer fee in the €4.5-5 million range and that Ekelenkamp is set to sign a four-year-contract. Commenting on the sale at a Thursday presser, Hertha sporting CEO Fredi Bobic seemed to suggest that the deal could still collapse. The German club executive indicated that the youngster remained in Berlin, and thus had not travelled to his new prospective side for a medical.

"He's still here," Bobic noted when asked about the player. "There is interest from several clubs, but a transfer is not through. The ink is far from dry, so I can't say too much about it right now."
