Mintzlaff confident he can appoint Eberl: "We know what Max wants."

Speaking on Germany's "Bild TV" program on Sunday, RB Leipzig chief executive Oliver Mintzlaff gave an update on the efforts to install former Gladbach administrator Max Eberl as the club's new sporting director.

Once again reiterating that there was no agreement in place to bring former Gladbach sporting director Max Eberl to Saxony, RB Leipzig managing director Oliver Mintzlaff also revealed that the former BMG administrator had even turned down his initial approaches last spring.

Mintzlaff said he was rebuffed shortly after Leipzig May Pokal triumph.

"I nevertheless didn't give up," Mintlaff told Germany's "Bild TV" on Sunday, "knowing full well that the door wasn't even cracked open, I persisted a bit. As the door creaked slightly ajar, I began to redouble my efforts."

As for the current state of Mintzlaff's metaphor, it would appear that the aperture is fully open now. All that remains is to negotiate a transfer fee with Borussia Mönchengladbach. The foals will want money for their man, who extended with them shortly before his shock resignation in January 2020.

"Now we're at a point that we know what Max wants, and I'll be holding talks with [Gladbach manager Stephan] Schippers in the next few days," Mintzlaff continued, "Then we'll see if we can get together. If not, we will certainly have to look for another alternative."

Eberl surely remains Mintzlaff's preferred option, perhaps even more so after the Leipzig executive convinced Marco Rose to sign on with the club. Getting Eberl next would reunite Rose with his former Gladbach sporting director, with whom Rose enjoyed a fruitful professional collaboration during his two years with the BMG.

"I already believe that we can work well together," Rose said (among other things) during his post-match presser yesterday, "I'll be happy if it works out. I know how he operates and functions."
