Kane's brace eases Bayern past spirited Augsburg
After an opening day rout of Bremen, Bayern welcomed the arrival of Bavarian neighbours Augsburg for Matchday 2. Some unfortunate news broke midweek that Jamal Musiala suffered a torn muscle fibre in training. As a result, the 20-year-old sensation did not feature in Tuchel’s star-studded Bayern-elf. Augsburg came into the game in good attacking form having hit Gladbach for four last Saturday. A big exclamation hung over the four goals conceded however, and today Bayern further exploited that defensive frailty with a commanding 3-1 win.
It came as no surprise that Bayern took the reins from the get-go – Sané looking the liveliest of all on the right touchline. Augsburg appeared content with remaining compact, organised, and counterattack-minded in the opening exchanges. The best chance fell to the visitors when Demirović raced in on goal but dragged his effort wide. At the other end Goretzka was first to sting the gloves of Dahmen from range.
A rather flat opening half hour for Die Rekordmeister subsided when they took a 1-0 lead. Sané slightly fortuitous to see his effort rebound off Dahmen and into Udokhai. The ball trickling in via the post for an own-goal. Bayern would receive a 39th minute penalty when Kimmich’s strike cannoned off the outstretched arm of Dorsch. Step forth Harry Kane to convert – Bayern’s new number nine opening his Allianz Arena account.
Kane sought another goal directly after the interval. The Englishman unfortunate to see his effort spiral over the bar as Udokhai applied pressure. Augsburg’s Vargas attempted the spectacular spotting Ulreich off his line, but the veteran goalkeeper managed to recover. Not to be outdone, Dahmen spectacularly foiled Gnabry's goal bound header after the hour.
Pushing for their third, Kane would make no mistake with his next opportunity. Coman and Davies combined perfectly for the latter to cross. Bayern 3-0 to the good as Kane showed his clinical nous clipping the ball over Dahmen. Dion Beljo’s well taken goal came as scant consolation for Maaßen’s brave Augsburg. A miniscule chip in the paint on what was a glossy 3-1 win for Tuchel’s Bayern.
