Dortmund edge closer to top-four with Haaland-inspired comeback over Bremen

Erling Haaland registered his 49th & 50th goals for Dortmund as the Black & Yellows donned a classic retro 1990’s inspired jersey & came back to score four goals after Werder Bremen opened the scoring.

Bremen have now lost their last five Bundesliga matches and Dortmund are now four points off the Champions League qualification place.

Both Dortmund & Bremen started the match in a balanced manner as both the teams had opportunities to go one up within the first ten minutes.

24-year-old Bremen left-winger Milot Rashica opened the account on the night with a well-timed run as he broke the offside trap and dribbled in to slot the ball past Marwin Hitz.

Dortmund equalized fifteen minutes later with a thumping effort by USMNT star Giovanni Reyna. The American received the ball at the edge of the 18-yard-box and rocketed a stunning shot into the top right corner.

Haaland, who had not scored in his previous seven matches, scored two in the space of four minutes before half time.

His first came off a penalty spot after Marco Reus was taken down in the box by central midfielder Kevin Mohwald. His second of the night was a simple tap-in into the empty net, thanks to a defensive muddle in the penalty area.

Jiri Pavelenka was kept busy with regular attacks by a motivated Dortmund forward line as Marco Reus & Jude Bellingham tested the Czech goalkeeper with effective shots.

Midfielder Maximilian Eggestein came close to getting the visitors back into the game with a shot against the woodwork, moments before Haaland almost scored a hattrick – a shot that scraped over the crossbar.

USMNT forward Josh Sargent and substitute David Selke both had their efforts go to waste. Minutes later, veteran Mats Hummels scored a header after a defensive mishap – extending Dortmund’s lead to four goals.

Dortmund sit in 5th place with 49 points, four points behind 4th placed Frankfurt who faltered to a four-nil humiliation at the hands of Borussia Monchengladbach. Werder Bremen are 13th in the table with 29 points, two clear of Mainz.
