Bundesliga veteran Admir Mehmedi announced his retirement from international football on Friday.

After a decade with the Swiss senior international squad, VfL Wolfsburg's Admir Mehmedi had been searching for just the right moment to step back for quite some time. On the occasion of the birth of his third child, the 30-year-old anchoring midfielder decided that this summer was as good a time as any.

"My wish was always to be able to determine the timing of the farewell itself," Mehmedi said in a statement released by his Bundesliga club, "The Euro proved a worthy ending. I am grateful and proud that I've been able to experience so many years in the circle of La Nati."

Mehmedi made his debut for the senior Swiss side in 2011 and participated in four major tournaments. He scored ten goals in 76 caps.

The former Freiburg and Leverkusen attacker could hardly have picked a better moment for his final farewell. Few shall forget how he sank the ninth and final penalty in the round-of-16 shootout against the French. Gladbach's Yann Sommer then saved the subsequent spot and led his team towards one of international football's most memorable ever celebrations at the corner flag.

Mehmedi's club career will require some extra attention in the coming season. After some prolific performances in the playoff rounds during Wolfsburg's failed bid to attain the 2020/21 Europa league, he made just 18 league appearances under former trainer Oliver Glasner. He essentially ceded a starting slot to Maximilian Philipp, making just three starts in the second half of the season.

Mehmedi will be out of contract with his Bundesliga club one year from now.
