Speaking to the ARD interviewer after a hard-fought 1st round 1-0 DFB Pokal victory over Kaiserslautern on the Betzenberg hill, Borussia Mönchengladbach and German national team defender Matthias Ginter hinted strongly that he expected to play for the foals during the 2nd round in October.

The tight match under the Fritz Walter floodlights asked quite a bit of Matthias Ginter on Monday night. When it came time for for a reporter's questions about his expiring contract, Gladbach's Matthias Ginter toed the same line he has been toeing since the issue became bigger news at this summer's European Championship.

"I firmly assume so," Ginter answered when asked if he would be in a BMG uniform for the next Pokal fixture in October.

Pressed a little more about the status of the contract negotiations, the 27-year-old national team starter expressed some understanding for the stall between himself and club management.

"I think Max Eberl has explained it quite well why we [player and agent] haven't yet received an offer for extension," Ginter said, "We're in the midst of Corona and these are difficult times for all clubs. Accordingly, we'll just have to wait and see.

Gladbach might still try to shop Ginter rather than simply let his contract run down. The center back remains valued at some €30 million, though no further buyers have surfaced since Bayer Leverkusen addressed their needs for the position via other means and backed off.
