Sky Germany have revealed that FC Schalke 04 were once very close to signing VfB Stuttgart star Deniz Undav.

The pay-TV channel's podcast 'Schalker Markt', stated that the Gelsenkirchen club had previously contacted the striker.

This was during a window from 2020 to 2022 when the German when he was still playing for Union St. Gilloise in Belgium.

However, even back then, Undav was considered too expensive for Schalke 04 to pursue at the time.

However, in a 2021 interview with Sport1, the current German national team striker expressed his openness to Schalke:

"Absolutely. If they get promoted, I'd love to. Although: I'd even move to the second division for Schalke.

“Despite my current [strong] goal scoring record in the first division. I could definitely imagine that.”

Instead of joining the Royal Blues, Undav first went to Brighton & Hove Albion in England and then to VfB Stuttgart.
