Despite leading twice, Bayer Leverkusen were held to a 2-2 draw by Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga on Saturday night.

The draw, Leverkusen's third in the last four Bundesliga games, leaves the German champions five points behind first place with eight games played.

In a post-match interview, Bayer 04 coach Xabi Alonso made it clear that he sees plenty of room for improvement for his team at the moment.

“We can't be happy at the end of the day, we gave the lead away twice. It's not the first time that's happened to us this season," Xabi Alonso said.

“There are a few things we need to correct. We can and have to defend better. At the moment we are lacking certain solidity. We'll get better when we get that back.”

In their next game, Leverkusen face Elversberg in the DFB-Pokal on Tuesday.
