DFB-Pokal Review: Köln survive after injury-time drama, Gladbach and Schalke progress

Neighbours 1. FC Köln and Borussia Mönchengladbach are through to the next round of the cup following narrow victories.

Jahn Regensburg 1-2 1. FC Köln

Including a famous 4-0 win over Champions League regulars Atalanta, Köln had a fantastic preseason. Jan Thielmann shared the positive sentiment before their first competitive game of the season, but they faced a reality check right away.

The newly-promoted team were on the verge of a first round cup exit before a dramatic injury-time in Regensburg. The 3. Liga team took the lead when birthday boy Benedikt Bauer scored 25 minutes before the end of regular time.

However, the Billy Goats escaped a cupset with Eric Martel and Ísak Jóhannesson finding the net after the 95th minute. Despite the late goals avoiding a surprising result, it was a dramatic end to a tense cup tie in Regensburg.

SV Atlas Delmenhorst 2-3 Borussia Mönchengladbach

Fifth-tier Delmenhorst responded twice to cancel out Mönchengladbach’s goals, but they fell short at the end of a valiant effort. Robin Hack scored a first-half brace for the visitors in yet another closely fought cup tie this weekend.

The assist king Kevin Stöger provided the final passes for the winger. Center-back Elvedi nets Gladbach’s winner in the 68th minute as Gerardo Seoane’s team avoided an early cup exit.

Lokomotive Leipzig 0-1 (AET) FC Schalke 04

In a tale of two stellar goalkeeping performances, Andreas Naumann and Justin Heekeren made several decent saves as the duel between the fourth-tier Lokomotive Leipzig and Schalke went all the way into extra-time.

In the end, supersub Bryan Lasme scored the only goal of the tie with a fine finish in the 107th minute. The Frenchman nearly did that earlier in the first-half of extra-time, but Naumann was unstoppable until that moment, which decided the tie in Schalke’s favor.
