For some time now, Borussia Dortmund and Nico Schlotterbeck have been in talks over a potential contract extension beyond 2027, with the 26-year-old taking his time to decide.

Mats Hummels understands why Schlotterbeck is finding the decision difficult.

Having switched between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund during his own career, the 37-year-old retired last summer and can relate to the difficult choice his former teammate now faces.

“I know how much he loves BVB,” Hummels said at the Legends Cup over the weekend, according to DPA.

“But a player of his quality naturally also wants the perspective of not only lifting the Legends Cup in ten years, but also achieving something else before that.

“I think I know his thoughts very well. What will happen? I really have no idea. Even if I knew, I wouldn’t tell you. But honestly, I really have no idea.”

Hummels also praised Schlotterbeck’s quality, calling him “one of the best centre-backs out there."

“He has the quality to play for any club in the world,” underlined the 37-year-old.

Among the clubs linked with the Dortmund and Germany defender are Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Liverpool and Barcelona.
