Mert Kömür could soon be off to the Premier League. According to Florian Plettenberg, newly promoted Hull City have held positive talks with the attacking midfielder, although no agreement has been reached yet. Kömür, 21, is coming off a breakout season with FC Augsburg.
There have been no club-to-club negotiations, per Plettenberg, so the price of a potential deal is not yet known. It was reported in January that Turkish side Beşiktaş had bid up to €12 million, but ultimately Augsburg held on to their promising talent.
Kömür is not the only Augsburg star to get interest from the Premier League this summer. Defender Christian Matsima has been linked with a move to Crystal Palace, although that deal is now off.
Last season, Kömür made a career-high 17 Bundesliga starts, scoring two goals and assisting four. However, after an initial hot start under manager Sandro Wagner, Kömür's form cooled in the second half of the season as Wagner was sacked. Kömür played a more sporadic role under Wagner's replacement, Manuel Baum.
The versatile midfielder remains a top prospect, and the German helped Augsburg finish ninth in the Bundesliga after flirting with relegation for much of the season. Notably, he came off the bench and assisted Augsburg's opener from the corner in a shock 2-1 win over Bayern Munich in January.
Unsurprisingly, several top clubs are reportedly after him this summer. Now, he appears set to make the move to Hull City, with the club returning to the Premier League for the first time since relegation in 2017.
Hull City owner Acun Ilıcalı may have teased the signing earlier this window when he posted about his club's transfer situation. Included in the list was a player who was both German and Turkish, listed at 70%.
Kömür, who is eligible for Türkiye but born and raised in Germany, fits the profile. He currently plays for Germany at youth level, but has been linked with a potential Türkiye switch.
