Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann’s job is in question after his side suffered a shock penalty shootout defeat to Paraguay in the round of 32 of the World Cup on Monday.
Still under contract until 2028, the coach said after the final whistle that he has no intention of stepping down, but would listen if the German Football Association deemed a change necessary.
“I'm ready and would like to prepare for the European Championship and the Nations League. If I am no longer wanted, then we need to talk about it,” Nagelsmann said in a post-match interview.
Analysing the performance, Nagelsmann said:
“We simply took too long to get our wing play going. As the game went on, we tried to force it more and ended up creating more situations in the box. We had control, but we lacked punch."
The Germany coach went on to criticise the decision to rule Jonathan Tah’s 2-1 goal out.
“It’s a joke that our goal was disallowed, but in the end you also have to say it just wasn’t enough,” Nagelsmann said.
“I am very disappointed because I feel we have a very cohesive team, and the impressions from training were always good. No one is failing on purpose. I feel sorry for all the fans in the stadium and at home.”
