VfL Wolfsburg took on Greuther Furth to put the seal on Bundesliga’s Matchday 21. Despite the Wolves severe win drought putting them in the relegation zone, there has been some cause for optimism in recent weeks – the January transfer window allowing the club to offload the out-of-favour Weghorst and replacing him with the experienced Max Kruse, and Jonas Wind from Denmark. Furth too have seen a rapid rise in form since the winter restart. Five points from their 3 January games whilst going undefeated gave themselves all the confidence they needed before travelling to Lower Saxony.

Wolfsburg drew first blood in the 7th minute through midfielder Vranckx. Renato Steffen’s powerful drive went through the legs of Burchert and struck the post, however the rebound fell kindly for the Belgian who prodded the ball home for 1-0 to the delight of the home fans in this must win clash.

Furth settled into the game well as the first half progressed. Leweling in particular looked very lively, alongside Dudziak on the attack. Casteels was called into question on a number of occasions, however all saves made were fairly routine for his standards.

Furth did bag their just rewards in the form of a penalty just before the half time whistle. Bornauw followed through on Dudziak in the box, catching the German on the ankle. VAR awarded the penalty and captain, Branimir Hrgota, sent Casteels the wrong way with an ice cool finish to the bottom left corner making it 1-1.

Having never scored for Wolfsburg before tonight, Vrankx made it two for himself on the night whilst giving his team a 2-1 lead four minutes into the second half. Although the chance wasn’t an easy one, Burchert came for a ball which really didn’t require the goalkeeper’s involvement. His subsequently poor punch fell fortunately once more for Wolfsburg’s midfielder who smashed home on the half volley.

Arnold made it 3-1 to the home side with 20 minutes to play. A long range freekick presented the dead ball specialist with a cracking opportunity that burst the back of the net. On second viewing, Burchert in goal stood no chance when replays highlighted a nasty deflection off the wall on its way towards goal which deceived the goalkeeper. Another deflected goal, this time off Hrgota, helped substitute Maxi Philipp score and put the affair well and truly to bed leaving three between the sides.

Kohfeld’s charges will travel to Frankfurt next weekend with some renewed confidence, while Furth will play host to Hertha whom they will fancy their chances of bouncing back and causing an upset.
