FC Schalke 04 have confirmed the signing of veteran striker Edin Džeko.

The 39-year-old joins the 2. Bundesliga side from Fiorentina on a deal running until the end of the season.

“From our first contact, Edin made it clear very quickly just how keen he was on the move. With him, we’re bringing in a striker who has performed at the very highest level throughout his career. Alongside his leadership experience, our team will benefit from his abilities as a target man and goalscorer,” said Schalke 04’s director of professional football, Youri Mulder.

“He made it very clear during our conversations how hungry he is for a successful second half of the season with us, and we’re really looking forward to seeing that.”

Džeko is no stranger to German football, having spent four seasons with VfL Wolfsburg, with whom he won the Bundesliga title.

Before making the move, the striker spoke with fellow Bosnia & Herzegovina international Nikola Katić, who has been at Schalke since the summer.

“From the moment there was interest, I took a very close look at Schalke and watched several matches,” Džeko explained.

"My discussions with the club, with head coach Miron Muslic, and of course with Nikola Katić, were very positive.

“It’s impressive to see how the team has developed this season after some difficult years. Now I want to give everything so we can be successful together in the second half of the campaign. I’m really looking forward to my first home match at a sold-out VELTINS-Arena," continued Džeko.
