Back in 2024, long-serving 1. FC Union Berlin goalkeeper Frederik Rønnow announced his retirement from the Danish national team.
However, following injuries to Denmark’s No. 1, Celtic's Kasper Schmeichel, and Chelsea goalkeeper Filip Jørgensen, Rønnow has agreed to return to the national team for this month's crucial World Cup play-offs.
“I’ve been in dialogue with Rønnow after Filip’s injury, and he’s agreed to help us in the matches we have coming up in March,” said Denmark coach Brian Riemer.
“We’re extremely grateful and happy to have a top-level goalkeeper available.”
Who will be Denmark's No. 1 goalkeeper after Schmeichel's injury?
West Ham’s Mads Hermansen will be Denmark's starting goalkeeper in Schmeichel’s absence, with Rønnow serving as his backup.
The 33-year-old has previously featured 10 times for the Danish senior national team.
Denmark will face North Macedonia on March 26, before potentially taking on the winner of the Czech Republic vs. Ireland match in the play-off final.
