Wirtz reflects on his best game yet for Germany

Florian Wirtz spoke after a “Man of the Match” performance in Germany's 4-3 win over Switzerland.

Florian Wirtz was the difference maker as Julian Nagelsmann’s side ended a four-game winless run for Germany against neighbours Switzerland. The Liverpool midfielder assisted twice in the first-half before winning it for the visitors with two beautiful strikes after the restart.

“Probably yes,” Wirtz said when he was asked whether it was his best performance in Germany’s shirt. “I'd be lying if I said I meant it to go exactly there for the first goal, but you can see that's exactly where I wanted the ball to go for the second one”.

The 22-year-old was also asked whether winning the World Cup is his personal goal. "Of course. We all want to reach the final and bring the cup home. We know it will be tough, but we have a great squad."

Germany produced a spectacular performance in the final third, but concerns grew over defensive fragilities after they conceded three goals from Switzerland’s three shots on target. "I'm not worried,” Wirtz shrugged off the defensive issues before admitting they could’ve prevented the goals.

“We have a very good team, and very good defenders. It's been quite some time since we played together. The goals were avoidable, and we'll work on improving that."
