After months of negotiations, a final decision has now been made on Julian Brandt's future.

After Borussia Dortmund's 2-1 win over 1. FC Köln on Saturday, managing director for sport Lars Ricken confirmed that the attacking midfielder will leave the club as a free agent when his contract expires this summer.

“The situation is that there were open discussions, and in the end we agreed that the expiring contract will not be extended,” Ricken told Sky Germany.

Brandt has made a total of 297 appearances for BVB since 2019, scoring 56 goals and providing 68 assists.

“I think we can only feel gratitude towards him. He played for us for seven years and was sometimes viewed critically. Today he again provided an assist. I've loved his numbers. He will turn 30 in a few weeks, and we can orient ourselves a bit differently, so in that sense it can also be an opportunity for both sides," said Ricken.
