Kevin Kampl and RB Leipzig have mutually agreed to terminate the midfielder's contract early, with the deal originally set to expire in the summer coming to an end on January 31.

The Slovenia international approached RB Leipzig with a request to leave for "family reasons", the Bundesliga side confirmed.

"I will now concentrate on my family back home, as I have done in recent months," said Kampl.

"I would not completely rule out returning to the pitch somewhere one day, even though that currently feels absolutely unrealistic, as I am dedicated to spending time with the people who are closest to me."

RB Leipzig managing director for sport Marcel Schäfer said:

"Kevin has made a huge contribution to the club during his time here. Over the course of his many seasons at the club, he became one of the faces of RB Leipzig, was a leader both on and off the pitch and played a huge part in the club’s biggest successes so far thanks to his strong and reliable performances.

"His decision to focus all of his energy on his family in this situation commands the highest respect and once more highlights his exemplary character."

Kampl joined RB Leipzig in 2017 and made 283 appearances for the club, scoring 10 goals and providing 23 assists.
