After Bayern Munich edged Dortmund in a thrilling 3–2 Klassiker, coach Vincent Kompany reflected on the drama, the team’s resilience, and the significance of the victory.
“From my perspective, I always greet the fans and then move on - today I stayed and stood longer to see the players with the fans and soak in the moment. That was beautiful,” Kompany said.
He acknowledged Dortmund’s fighting spirit, particularly during the 2–2 equalizer, but stressed that Bayern kept pushing and were ultimately rewarded. “You could feel that Dortmund wanted to use their chances, even at 2–2 they wanted to continue and win. But we also kept trying and going, and in the end we were rewarded.”
Kompany described the match as a showcase for German football: “I think today was a great advertisement for the Bundesliga — intensity, high tempo, beautiful goals.”
Despite the emotional win, the coach was quick to reset focus for the season ahead. “From Monday, we think differently again. It goes on normally; we think from game to game, no matter how many wins or goals we have. Why should we stop just because we beat Dortmund? I’m looking forward to the next months.”
He also highlighted the team’s mentality: “That we came back again today shows our character. About myself, I like this statement: ‘always keep going,’ no matter what happened before - whether good or bad. We have great trust in ourselves, and we proved that again today.”
Bayern’s thrilling comeback was as much a testament to their tactical and technical quality as it was to their fighting spirit - a combination Kompany praised as emblematic of the club’s ethos and of German football at its best.
