Thirty years after winning the Ballon d’Or himself in 1996, former Borussia Dortmund and Germany star Matthias Sammer has congratulated Harry Kane on becoming the first Bundesliga player since him to win the prestigious award.

“I congratulate Harry Kane, as well as his teammates, the coaching staff and FC Bayern Munich, on winning the Ballon d’Or,” Sammer said.

"Objectively assessing individual performances in football is difficult. Whether it is Kane, Yamal or Mbappé, there will always be room for debate. What matters is respecting the choice of the winner and acknowledging his achievements.

"Harry Kane has had an outstanding year. He is an exceptional goalscorer, a great personality and a true leader. He scores decisive goals, takes responsibility and also works tirelessly off the ball, tracking back deep into his own half. He is never above doing the hard work and is completely free of any airs and graces. This combination of world-class quality, leadership and humility is what makes him stand out."

Kane scored 73 goals for club and country during the 2025/26 season.
