Newcastle United are "optimistic" of signing Freiburg midfielder Johan Manzambi, with advanced talks currently underway, according to British journalist Ben Jacobs.

After reportedly reaching an agreement for Hoffenheim winger Bazoumana Touré, Newcastle are now seemingly pushing to get a deal for the Swiss international over the line.

Manzambi was first linked with a move to the Magpies by the Daily Mail four days ago.

After selling Anthony Gordon to FC Barcelona for €80 million, Newcastle are closing in on the departure of Sandro Tonali to Tottenham for a reported €117 million, including add-ons, leaving them with significant funds to reinvest.

Reports in the English media suggest that a fee of around €46-48 million could be enough to convince Freiburg to sell Manzambi.

Whether Freiburg are willing to push through a deal at this stage is unlikely, however, with the 20-year-old still representing Switzerland at the World Cup with the potential of attracting further interest with his performances.

Manzambi has been one of Switzerland’s standout performers at the tournament so far, scoring three goals and providing one assist in three games.
