DFB issues two-match cup ban for Halstenberg

The DFB sports court officially handed down a two-match ban in the country's domestic cup for RB Leipzig's Marcel Halstenberg on Monday.

The 30-year-old, who must still sign a contract extension to remain with the club beyond June 30th, earned a straight red in Saturday's Pokal Final.

For the tactical foul that saw him earn a straight red card in Saturday's DFB Pokal final, German national team defender Marcel Halstenberg will have to sit out the next two matches in next year's cup. Presumably, this will render him unavailable for Leipzig in the 2022/23 competition.

It should nevertheless be noted that, while reported upon, a contract extension for the 30-year-old nine-times capped international has not been officially confirmed yet.

Contract extensions for Halstenberg, Kevin Kampl, and Christopher Nkunku have reportedly been in the works since the beginning of the month. Thus far, however, only an extension with Kampl has been publicly confirmed.

RB Leipzig sporting CEO Oliver Mintzlaff's comments towards Halstenberg, who has played with the club since 2015, would appear to suggest that the defender factors into RB's long-range planning.

Mintzlaff expressed the hope that Halstenberg would continue on the "fantastic path" that he "contributed to the success of".
