Reports: Ajax contact Freiburg about possibly acquring Flekken

Two Dutch sources claim that Ajax Amsterdam have lodged an official inquiry with SC Freiburg about potentially bringing keeper Mark Flekken back to his home country.
After an outstanding season with the surprise Breisgauer, SCF keeper Mark Flekken made it into the many of the editorial "XIs of the season" on German editorial pages. Two separate Dutch news sources are claiming that Ajax Amsterdam have contacted the Schwarzwaldverein about the possibility of bringing the 28-year-old back to his native land.

Both De Telegraaf and De Limburger confirm that Ajax have lodged an official request for a potential transfer with Freiburg. The BaWü club may wish to cash in on the veteran, whose market value has climbed up to €5.5 million after Freiburg purchased him for €2 million from MSV Duisburg in 2018.

Freiburg have in fact parted company with their first-choice keeper after the last two successive seasons. Alexander Schwolow (the #1 in the 2019/20 campaign) was sold to Hertha BSC prior to the start of the 2020/21 season. Florian Müller kept guard between the sticks that year as a loan player, and had no qualms about letting him depart.

Ajax find themselves in acute need of a new goalkeeper, meaning that the Erdevisie club may be willing to spend a significant amount of money. Furthermore, Flekken himself may wish to shore up the possibility of starting for his national side in this coming winter's World Cup by moving closer to home.
