Bayern Munich newcomer Joao Cancelo has cited a lack of playing time as one of the reasons behind his move to Germany.
Joao Cancelo has outlined the reasons behind his six-month loan move from Manchester City to Bayern Munich.
At his official unveiling at the Bavarian club, the 28-year-old right-back told reporters:
"It's a great feeling so far. I knew how big the club are and wanted to take this opportunity and be able to train with the other players as soon as possible. I'm looking forward to getting to work.
"I haven't played much in the past few weeks, which influenced my decision. It has nothing to do with my relationship with Pep. I really wanted to embark on this new adventure at such a club with such a big history. It's a dream for me."
Speaking ahead of Bayern's DFB-Pokal clash with Mainz tomorrow, head coach Julian Nagelsmann said he is pleased to have Cancelo in his squad.
"He can feature in a number of positions and is a very attacking-minded defender," noted Nagelsmann.
"He's able to cut in and is good from crosses. He's got a different character to some of the other players at his position. It's a logical signing for us."
Asked if Cancelo will start tomorrow, Nagelsmann responded:
"He's fit and theoretically able to play. I'm not sure yet. We have a lot of fit players. We have to find a balance between stability and the excitement of a new player coming in."
