Andrich surprised by timing of first Germany call-up

Going through a difficult spell at Bayer Leverkusen, Robert Andrich admits his first call-up to the German national team came as a surprise.
It's been a good season for Bayer Leverkusen so far, but a difficult one for Robert Andrich, who has struggled for regular playing time.

With that in mind, the central midfielder was surprised to receive his first call-up to the German national team from new coach Julian Nagelsmann.

"The timing was very surprising for me, because things have been going better and better for me personally over the last five years, and I'm just not that satisfied at the moment," Andrich told DPA at Germany's camp in the United States.

Nevertheless, he was happy to receive the call from Nagelsmann and added confidently:

"I think I have earned it over the years."

So far, the 29-year-old is enjoying his time in the United States.

"For me personally, I can leave the negativity at home a little bit and look forward to this incredible experience here in the U.S. and with the DFB, soak it all in, knock it out and just do my best," Andrich said.

"There's no room for negativity."

Andrich could make his Germany debut against the United States this Saturday.
