St.Pauli extinguish the cup dream of Regionalliga side Homburg

Despite going toe-to-toe with the 2.Bundesliga table toppers to enter the dressing rooms level at the break, FC Homburg 08 ultimately succumbed to a 4-1 defeat at the hands of St.Pauli.

Having dumped Darmstadt and Greuther Furth out in two previous rounds, Regionalliga Sudwest outfit FC Homburg 08 faced a different challenge in St.Pauli this evening. The 2.Bundesliga leaders hit the front in the 24th minute via the boot of Hauke Wahl who arrived late at the back post. Incredibly, Homburg responded swiftly and in obscure fashion too – Metz’s short freekick was mis-controlled by goalkeeper Burchert and Mendler raced in to tap home.

Despite Homburg giving it everything, St.Pauli re-established a 2-1 lead not long after the hour mark. Once again Eric Smith was at the heart of things. The Swede collected a pass from Irvine and clipped the ball into the box where substitute Saad rounded goalkeeper Kretzschmar. Five minutes later when Marcel Hartel swivelled on the 18-yard-box to pick out the top left corner.

The cup tie was put beyond doubt in the 73rd minute when Johannes Eggestein struck for 4-1. Intercepting Jansen’s tame pass, the St.Pauli target man turned and drove his effort low and precisely past a hapless Kretzschmar. The club from the Hanseatic city of Hamburg advance to the quarter final round in style.
