Matthäus on Davies: "A shadow of himself"

Lothar Matthäus believes Alphonso Davies is currently a "shadow of himself".
In a generally difficult season for Bayern Munich, Alphonso Davies has struggled to perform consistently at his best.

Former Germany international Lothar Matthäus goes as far as to say that Davies is currently "a shadow of his former self".

According to Matthäus, the main reason for this is not the uncertainty surrounding Davies' future, but rather the fact that the staff aren't giving him the best conditions to perform.

"Alphonso Davies is a shadow of himself, his mind is not clear. Players need to be caressed from time to time. They need a friendly chat off the pitch - like Uli Hoeness used to do. Jupp Heynckes, Ottmar Hitzfeld and Udo Lattek also used to do that," Matthäus said.

"The reasons for his crisis lie in the last few months, not in the difficult talks and negotiations with his agent in the last few weeks."

Davies and Bayern have been haggling over a new contract for months, and an agreement seems increasingly unlikely.

Should they fail to reach an agreement, the left-back is likely to be on the move this summer, with Real Madrid thought to be his main suitors.
