Even so, Hummels doesn't feel it's entirely impossible that he could get to represent 'Die Mannschaft' again.
"I'm only 30, and I'll still be playing football for a long time," the Bayern München defender explained in an interview with Sport Bild and continued:
"It's impossible to predict what will happen in football. The national team player Mats Hummels has been pushed aside in my head, but he's not packed away in the corner of the closet where he can never be found again."
Löw traveled to Munich to inform the three Bayern players of his decision in person, and the German Football Association has subsequently been criticized for the handling and timing of the matter.
And although Hummels insists that it could all have been been handled in a better way, he also acknowledges that Löw faced an extremely difficult task.
"It was probably difficult for the national team coach to find a way to handle the talk that would make everyone say: 'that all happened in a really great way'. 'Jogi' Löw couldn't find the perfect path. That was impossible. But Thomas, Jerome and I had the feeling that it could have been done with a little more appreciation," Hummels said.
